Congratulations to the year 13 A-Level Drama students who successfully completed their first performance exam recently. This was the culmination of an arduous, extremely long devising period. The whole process took months to complete, requiring real courage, commitment and confidence. Suri, Shalom, Shona and Chanel demonstrated enormous amounts of creativity, had to have abundant energy and employ real stamina.

They started with 'nothing' and through relentless experimentation, dedication, hard work and a resilience which made me, as their teacher, extremely proud, devised and performed an inventive, challenging piece of theatre.

Hats off to them all!

On Wednesday 9th July, a group of our students had the exciting opportunity to visit two of the most important institutions in the UK’s political and legal systems: Parliament and the Supreme Court.

In the morning, the group visited the Supreme Court, where they were able to sit in on a live court hearing focused on a debt-related case. This offered a fascinating insight into how legal arguments are presented at the highest level, and how judges question and deliberate complex issues.

Then student had a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament. Students explored the historic corridors of power, including the House of Lords chamber, where they learned about the role of peers and how laws are scrutinised.

After the tour, students took part in an engaging workshop on snap elections. They ran their own mock election, complete with campaign pitches and ballots. It was a brilliant way to bring political theory to life.

The trip was a fantastic way to deepen students’ understanding of UK democracy and the justice system, sparking some great debates and conversations. Many thanks to the staff and guides who made it such an informative and memorable day.

Year 12 Sociology students took part in a creative and challenging revision activity for the Beliefs in Society topic. In the first round, groups restructured deconstructed exemplar essays, focusing on introductions, main arguments, analysis, evaluations, and conclusions! A great way to practise essay building skills and reflect on areas for improvement.

In the second round, students were assigned a sociological perspective and tasked with rebuilding a paragraph from that viewpoint, before filling in missing researchers and key concepts to complete the argument. Well done to Chris, Yoel, Maniyah, and Hafsa, who were the fastest team to complete both rounds accurately across both groups!

Over the past year, HCL6F Book Club enrichment students have explored an array of different literary styles.

At the beginning of the year, the sessions were genre-themed. Students voted for which genre they would like to explore each half term, and had a free choice of books within that genre. First up was Thriller and Mystery books, with authors such as Gillian Flynn, Liane Moriarty and Karen M. McManus rated highly by our students. The next genre students voted for was Romance. We debated the various tropes of Romance novels, such as friends-to-lovers, enemies-to-lovers and secondchance romance. The most popular Romance authors among our students were Colleen Hoover and Uzma Jalaluddin.

Moving into the spring term, the group switched to communal reading. Our first group book was Orbital by Samantha Harvey, this year’s Booker Prize winner. The novel is a meditative account of six astronauts aboard the International Space Station. While the literary style of the novel is very beautiful, the general consensus among the group was that the narrative was too slow and lacking in action.

Our next read was Before the coffee gets cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. This magical realism novel is set in Tokyo café which offers its customers the chance to travel through time—as long as they return before the coffee gets cold. The characters use time travel to explore a range of romantic and family situations, and the overall tone of the novel is uplifting. A few students were not keen, but generally this novel was popular with the group.

Our current and final read of the year is Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner. One of the mostborrowed books from out library, this novel tells the story of the friendship between two boys in 1970s Afghanistan.

Last Monday, we, the year 12 A – Level Drama students presented our devised performance in a Punchdrunk style to an invited audience. Punchdrunk are a theatre company who create immersive theatrical pieces where audiences are involved in the performance from the start. The performance took place in various spaces around the school building and involved ‘organ dissections’, a treasure hunt, murder mystery games and our own version of a ‘Squid Game: red light/ green light’. It culminated in a loud, spectacular, final countdown of strength, stamina, wit and knowledge - 30 individuals all competing for the ‘Winning Position’! The audience very much enjoyed this rollercoaster of events. Feedback included:

“I wish I did A-Level drama!”

“It felt like I was in a movie!

“It was a great, fun, immersive experience!”

“I didn't really want to stay after school and come but I'm so glad I did!”

“Loved the music choices”

“It was so much fun- can we do it again!”

The performers [Suri, Shalom, Shona and Dr Wharton, who was filling in for Chanel who was unfortunately injured] all agreed that in addition to the whole thing being so much fun, “the most refreshing thing was seeing so much audience engagement and all the teachers working alongside the students in unity laughing and smiling!”

“I really enjoyed it, all nerves left my body the second the performance started”,

“If I could do it all over again I would!”

“I had a ball!”

This week, our Year 12 students have been busy promoting their student president applications, working hard to earn your votes. From creative posters to passionate speeches, it’s been inspiring to see their dedication and enthusiasm for making a difference in our school.

Seeing them campaign really reminds me how time flies—it feels like just yesterday I was in their position, putting myself forward for this role. It’s a challenging but rewarding experience, and I truly admire their effort.

To all the candidates, I wish you the best of wishes! No matter the outcome, putting yourself out there and stepping up as a leader is an achievement in itself.

Last week Friday, Year 12 took part in a powerful workshop delivered by Bold Voices, exploring gender stereotypes and their impact on society.

The facilitators from Bold Voices guided the students through a series of activities designed to challenge preconceived notions about gender and to explore how these stereotypes influence everything from personal identity to societal expectations.

The workshop encouraged critical thinking and self-reflection, prompting students to examine their own beliefs and experiences surrounding gender. It was a space where students could share their thoughts, listen to different perspectives, and engage in constructive debates about what true gender equality looks like.

Students engaged thoughtfully and left with a deeper understanding of gender equality and how they can be agents of change at school and in the wider community!

In this Cultural Perspectives class over the past term students have been learning about different styles of dance which are performed around the world.

This has included Tap, Ballet, Contemporary, Flamenco, Tango and Bélé. We have been exploring the origins of each dance and the varying reasons as to why communities around the world dance. As well as these more well-known dances, we have looked at other styles ranging from Pantsula, a South African dance which originated as a response to the apartheid regime to the Turkish "Halay" dance, normally performed at weddings.

This week students had the chance to present to the class about a dance of their choice. We saw excellent presentations about Eskista, Azonto, Zaouli, Dancehall, Loketo and popular TikTok dances. We even had a few dance demonstrations!

Thanks to you all for your excellent participation in this CP.

The trip to Lucy Cavendish College was such an amazing experience. I got to attend a really interesting STEM lecture about the hallmarks of cancer, which gave me a whole new perspective on how scientists study diseases.

We also had a tour of the college, which was great because I got to see what student life there is actually like. There was also a really useful talk on the Cambridge application process, which gave me a much better idea of what they look for in applicants.

One of the best parts of the day was meeting other high-achieving students who all have big goals for the future—it was inspiring to be around such motivated people.

Overall, the trip made me even more excited about my own ambitions and what’s possible in the future.

80% of media jobs are behind the scenes in this linked, networked, connected world we live in.

Last night Ms Yinka O and Mr Jonathon E visited open evening to talk to students about the range of digital media careers. Cognizant are a global digital media company who employ over 250,000 worldwide in the digital media world. Yinka originally trained as an engineer but is now a Digital Product Manager for some of the biggest name in the media world – British Airways, Netflix, Disney…

Current projects involve working globally in conjunction with companies such as Germany, Australia and here in the UK.

They were at pains to point out that careers in the digital media world are not just in the entertainment sector but for the world of business too. Digital media skills are applied to the complete customer journey e.g. for British Airways this digital journey each step involving specialist professionals: from the buttons on the app, to the booking process, the check in desk and the welcome to the flight. And let's not forget ordering lunch and the in-flight entertainment.

The creation of digital media can be many things, be that designing beer bottle labels or the Netflix browsing experience, the EasyJet banner or the hospital appointment system. Not only does this process have to be client focussed but also has to be delivered over multi platforms to deliver that personalised experience for the end user.

Congratulations to all the students who took part in the arts showcase just before half term. The event was organised by Jazzelle and Amara and featured year 12 and 13 students. We had drama scripted performances, singing, dancing, piano playing, live art, poetry and spoken word. The aim was to show off talent and share hobbies and to have some fun. The drama studio was packed and lots of fun was had. It was fabulous to see how much talent we have here and audience members reported feeling 'inspired' and 'motivated' to take part next time!

- Dr Wharton, Drama Teacher

This performance was a great way to show people drama isn’t something silly or easy to do, it takes a lot of effort to put things together and the art of singing, acting, rapping, doing spoken words or speed drawing isn’t as easy as it looks or sounds. It is just like every other profession which takes thought and practice. This was a beautiful cathartic performance where we were able to communicate different meanings through art forms and it was loved by everyone. every piece had a meaning behind it whether the meaning was said or not.

Year 13 Boys Secure a Thrilling Draw Against Harris Battersea

The Year 13 boys' football team put on a spirited performance in their latest match against Harris Battersea, fighting back twice to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw.

The game started with our boys on the back foot, as Harris Battersea took an early lead. Despite some promising attacks, we struggled to break through their defence. However, the momentum shifted when Ismael found space on the edge of the box and fired home a brilliant equaliser, bringing us back into the game.

Battersea responded quickly, regaining their lead and putting our team under pressure. But with time running out, captain Alimamy stepped up in the final moments, striking a sensational goal to level the score just before the final whistle.

It was a hard-fought battle, and the boys showed great resilience and teamwork to come away with a well-earned point. Well done to the team for their determination— on to the next challenge!

Overall, this experience was a well thought out wholesome experience, that should be the first of many events to come.

- Leanne R, Year 12

Franklin House Day was a fantastic celebration filled with energy, teamwork, and uplifting moments! One of the highlights of the day was our Compliment Box, where students had the opportunity to write kind and encouraging notes to one another— whether anonymously or with their names. It was heartwarming to see so many thoughtful messages being
shared, reminding us all of the power of positivity and appreciation. Organising this activity was truly rewarding, and it was amazing to witness the smiles it brought to everyone. Thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the day so special!

The workshop focused on developing employability skills, improving interview techniques, and enhancing presentation abilities. Students had the chance to practice interview questions related to their areas of interest, learn from industry experts, and make connections with potential employers. It also aimed to boost their confidence and prepare them to feel more comfortable
in professional environments.

“During the workshop, I found myself recalling past experiences and commitments, and by the end, was able to assuredly talk about the skills and qualities I’ve gained from them. Also, through the mockinterviews, I learnt how to conduct myself with confidence to potential future employers, and answered questions by my peers, and reflected on feedback given.”

- Sabrina A, Year 12

“I was lucky enough to take part in the Talk the Talk workshop, which was an event where we mainly focused on honing our communication skills - such as posture, hand gestures and body language. We took part in mock interviews to be able to gain an insight into the types of questions you could be asked when applying for a job or even a place in a university (for your chosen course).
This was beneficial in many ways, even being a confident booster for most - but most importantly it was an opportunity to guide students into the career they are most interested in and would like to pursue, even if they are still quite unsure.”

Our EPQ students here at HCL6F have been working really hard in recent months to complete their varied and fascinating essays on subjects ranging from why we know so little about the ocean to whether the domestication of dogs is moral.

On Thursday this week, four students were ready to present the findings of their projects to a small audience. I was so proud of how they presented their projects as real experts on their subjects with composure and an engaging manner.

They are coming to the end of writing their essays and these presentations mark a huge achievement for them. Well done!

On Wednesday 18th December, just before the holidays, year 12 and year 13 drama students enjoyed a trip to the theatre to see a version of Alice in Wonderland, set in Brixton. The production featured rap music, a cast of weird and wonderful characters
from the area and a train careering towards 'Nonsenseland'. It was a fun, festive evening, enjoyed by all!

- Dr Wharton

I went to the Brixton house theatre to watch Alice in Wonderland, the play started after an explosive argument with Mum at Brixton Underground Station, eleven-year-old Alice leaps onto the tube seconds before the doors close.

Trapped on a train speeding into Nonsense, surrounded by weird and wonderful passengers, and at the mercy of a Queen who won’t relinquish the controls of the Victorian line tube.

The play was every vibrant using bright colour costume and engaging lighting and acting. The acting was perfect for all ages and captured the whole audience with interactive sing-alongs.

Following our first ever Ofsted inspection in November, I am delighted to share the news that we are officially an outstanding school. This is a significant achievement in just over three years since opening and reflects the dedication of our staff and the vibrant and inclusive academic community that we have created in such a short time.

This grading is very hard to achieve and we join an exclusive group of Further Education and Skills providers (around 10% nationally) who are graded outstanding.

We are extremely proud and know that this seal of approval will help our fantastic school go from strength to strength. Our students are always fantastic, and their conduct and commitment during the inspection was noted as exceptional by the inspection team. You should be very proud of them. The report is attached for you to read.

Thank you, as always, for your support.

Year 12 students also participated in a career talk about apprenticeships, presented by Ms. Pombo and Mr. Ramsden from the Careers Team. The session introduced apprenticeships as an alternative to university, explaining how they combine paid employment with formal study, allowing students to develop practical skills while working toward nationally recognized qualifications. Students learned about different apprenticeship levels, ranging from Intermediate (equivalent to GCSEs) to Degree (bachelor’s or master’s level), and explored opportunities across various industries like healthcare, engineering, business, and creative fields. The talk emphasised the importance of starting research early, gaining work experience, and attending employer events to prepare for applications.

Biology Trip

During October, biology students went on a 3- day trip to Juniper Hall in Surrey. Juniper Hall is a historic 17th century country house with beautiful views, amazing rivers and neverending grasslands. While there, we learnt lots about ecology and biodiversity, and how important it is for different ecosystems.

Throughout our stay, we learnt about what biodiversity meant. We investigated why different habitats have different species of plants and used random sampling to compare two different habitats (woodland and grassland) available to us on-site. We then spent a whole day learning about succession (which is oneway ecosystems change overtime) and analysing the data we collected on the abundance and distribution of different species to see how they were affected by succession. Finally, we conducted our own investigation, using the skills we learnt in the course to collect, process and analyse our own data and concluded the investigation.

While on this trip, I know my classmates and I learnt a lot of new information. We practised how to plan and carry out an ecological investigation, how to carry out a t-test (which showed if there was a significant difference between this data and how they’re related), different types of sampling and when to use them, etc. Additionally, students developed many skills: communication, leadership, observation, resilience.

Overall, the trip was an amazing experience for the biology students that attended and we’re very grateful that we were able to go on such an educational and excellent trip.

This week on the 17th of December our brilliant staff and students put on a lovely Christmas Carol Event at St James’ Church.

We had some students playing instruments such as the piano and others who performed all time favourite carols to a church full of their peers and teachers.

Thank you to everyone who performed, it was a special and festive event, and everyone who read, sang or played deserves huge congratulations.

It was an amazing way to start the last week of term and everyone involved did a fantastic job. It was Harris Clapham’s second Christmas Carol event, and we hope with how well this years one went, that we are able to organise a Christmas Carol service every year! Well done and Merry Christmas!

Last Friday the Year 12 and 13 Art students visited The Dulwich Picture Gallery and The Horniman Museum. During the day the students took lots of photos for their sketchbooks and completed 2 zines, full of sketches.

Our first location was The Dulwich Picture Galleries main hall where we mused over the works of the great masters such as Rembrandt and Jan van Huysum. Kel did an incredible study of a seascape by Willem van de Velde the Younger and Lazuli a portrait by the contemporary artist, Svetlana Kornilova.

After that we visited the Tirzah Garwood retrospective. Garwood was a multidisciplinary artist best known for her beautiful, marbled papers and wood cut prints. She also created intricate quilts, whimsical paintings and dollhouse inspired paper structures.

We then travelled to The Horniman Museum where we wandered through The Sunken Garden, and into their instrument collection, which showcased musical instruments from around the world. We finished the day in The World Gallery, which contains global artifacts and contemporary artworks inspired by the collection.

Overall, the trip gave the students the opportunity to gain new material for their sketchbooks through the means of sketching in their zines, taking photographs and encountering new artists and artistic practices.

After a fiercely contested match at Clapham Common against Harris Westminster , our year 13s came out as winners with a resounding 3-2 win, with goals coming from Franklin K (1) and Mohamed O (2) and great performances across the pitch.

The team decided that Mohamed O was in fact our Man of the Match, with a stunning performance to get his team back in front on 2 occasions, after the match we spoke to Mohamed who stated “I’m happy to have scored two goals, but even happier about the win and the outstanding performance from the boys. We fought until the very end; every player gave their all and proved that teamwork and communication are more important than experience and ability. Thank you to Ms. Padmore, Ms. Sandy, and all the other teachers who made this possible for us. We appreciate your efforts and hope for more opportunities like this in the future.”

Once again, Thank you to Ms Padmore and Ms Sandy for giving our year 13s the opportunity to play and win in their first ever game and thank you to all the students and staff that came to support us.

This week, Year 12 students attended a careers talk on medicine and psychiatry delivered by medical students from King's College London. They participated in Session 1: Understanding Mental Health and Exploring Careers in Mental Health, which focused on exploring careers in the NHS and psychiatry.

The programme, Psych for 6th, is designed to provide aspiring medics with a deeper understanding of psychiatry as a career, raise awareness about mental health issues, and offer guidance on medical school applications. This initiative includes two one-hour sessions, delivered by KCL medical students, offering students a glimpse into what it’s like to study psychiatry in medical school. The sessions also include case scenario discussions and valuable tips and advice for navigating the medical application process.

In the first session, students had the opportunity to ask questions about psychosis, the required A-level subjects for this career path, job salaries, and the daily life of a doctor. Next week, students will take part in Session 2: A Deep Dive into a Specific Medical Condition, which will be followed by an opportunity to practice taking a medical history with their peers.

Students found the talk very helpful, asking plenty of questions and showing a lot of interest in the opportunities available. They were particularly engaged when learning about how apprenticeships combine practical work experience with study and how they can be a pathway to successful careers in industries like technology, business, healthcare, and more. This session gave students practical advice and a better understanding of how to approach apprenticeship applications confidently

Open Day

The annual Open Day at our school was a resounding success, bringing together students, parents, and staff for an evening filled with excitement, learning, and meaningful engagement. The event showcased the passion our current students have for Economics, while also offering parents and prospective students' a glimpse into the enriching educational experiences we provide.

One of the highlights of the day was an interactive quiz which was not just a fun exercise but an educational one, aimed at keeping both students and parents up-to-date on current economic conditions which is central in studying Economics. Participants learned that the current inflation rate has fallen to 1.7% in November 2024, a significant drop from the 10.7% rate seen in 2022. This decline in inflation is a positive signal, suggesting that prices are stabilizing after a period of sharp increases. The quiz also revealed that the current interest rate stands at 4.75%, down from 5.25% earlier this year which one parent highlighted was a "welcome news for those with mortgages". It was a proud moment to see our prospective incoming students and their parents confidently discussing how economic policies translate into real-world impacts, especially at a time when the economy is a topic of great public concern.

Also this week, our year 13s are gearing up to sit their mock exams over the next two weeks. The atmosphere among the Year 13 cohort is one of focused determination, with students engaging in targeted revision sessions to ensure they are fully prepared.

Digital Day

On Wednesday 13th , 14 media students took part in The British Interactive Media Association (BIMA) Digital Day A team of digital media professionals from Zone Digital came in to guide, mentor and lead the projects.

Students were asked to create a digital product from a brief created by Microsoft, Burberry and the RSPCA. Their brains humming with ideas and buzzing with design and content they set about making the basic idea a reality.

“It was an interesting day, great, smooth sailing”

They sketched out the user journey, the user experience, and how the product meets the user's needs and most importantly how it will look on the screen.

Then they had to do the thing which no one enjoys – the presentation to their peers. It was a joy to see them flourish throughout the day and rise to the challenge. They stood and delivered with a certain style their digital visions for: an animal welfare app, a dyslexia learning game, a sustainable Burberry coat and a personalised AI learning bot.

“It was fascinating to see the way the media works and the variety of people and roles there are”

It was a pleasure to see them grow and start to work with discipline and confidence with the seasoned industry professionals. So huge respect to the Y12 media team: Loic, Yacine, Tivon; Nana, Martina, Sofia; Raheema, Sarah, Rania; Ahman, Maniya, Jaida, Tanisha for all they achieved and here’s hoping that one of the teams will go forward to the grand final. Good luck guys!

Digital day came about because the digital sector has been growing at twice the rate of the broader economy; but unless we fix the skills shortage, that growth will not be able to continue. Digital Day works to encourage more young people to discover the potential of a digital career.

Ten lucky applied science and biology students attended the Guys and St Thomas’s Careers in Healthcare day this July. The day was incredible, meeting professionals from all over the NHS and learnt that there is so much to do in the NHS without having to go to medical school. We learnt about careers that we had not even heard about and were inspired by the enthusiasm we were shown by speakers in these jobs. As well as talks there were many practical activities, we learnt how to intubate a patient, we used the robots and VR headsets which staff use to train and practice medical simulations, we even had a go at keyhole surgery – on sugar cubes! Mrs Mazewski and Mr Tompros were so impressed and proud to take our students who really impressed everyone they met.

On Friday 3rd November Y12 students Saron, Blessing, Micheala, Jayden, Hajar and Johanna took part in the first ever Elixirr (a business consultancy) Employability Programme. The scheme was devised by Elixirr to help clients design their thinking to solve the problems they face. Students were challenged to solve the issues of sustainability in their schools, expand inclusive learning or, as HCL6F faced, how to make their school part of the wider community.

Harris Rainham, Wimbledon, East Dulwich Boys, Westminster, Willesden, Bermondsey and Beckenham all sent teams.

HCL6F students work excellently together designing a mentoring scheme, helping Y13 students develop their UCAS statements (particularly those aiming for medicine and psychology) and develop close ties with the many local primary and secondary schools in close proximity to us. When it came to presenting, the team were congratulated for being so professional, being just 3 seconds off their allotted time of 5 minutes - Impressive! They answered questions well, and scored a unanimous victory. Their scheme was noted for being cost free, of mutual benefit to all participants and for being implementable.

We look forward to defending our title next year!
