Sixth Form Open Evening - Social Sciences
The Social Science classroom was full of energy on Tuesday evening as Psychology and Sociology joined forces to put on a fun, hands-on display for prospective sixth form students. On one side of the room, Psychology and AAQ Mental Health stole the show with a brain made out of jelly. Visitors had to place labels on the correct parts of the brain, testing their knowledge of the four lobes and cortexes. There were plenty of great guesses, and by the end of the evening the poor jelly brain was just about holding together, but it definitely did its job of catching people’s attention!
Students asked lots of thoughtful questions about topics such as biopsychology, social influence, and forensic psychology, and it was fantastic to hear how many are already thinking about careers in therapy, education, criminal psychology, law, and medicine.
On the other side of the room, Sociology and AAQ Criminology encouraged students to think critically about the world around them. They were shown pictures of people of different genders, ages, and ethnicities and asked questions like “Who is most likely to succeed in education?” and “Who is most likely to have committed a crime?” Their answers led to some really powerful conversations about stereotypes and how they can affect people’s lives and opportunities. Many students got involved in passionate debates about why they made certain choices and what these assumptions say about society.
A huge thank you goes to our amazing student helpers: Tyecia, Aisha, Lesley, Cheryl, Aiman, Zamzam, Esther, Khalil, Tianna, Shahd, and Laourah. They ran the activities brilliantly, shared their honest experiences of sixth form life, and gave fantastic advice to students who were still deciding what to study. Their enthusiasm and friendliness made the evening a real success and showed exactly what makes our sixth form such a welcoming place to learn.
